INTERVIEW WITH JAMES HUDSON

A 16-year-old boy, discarded into the care of a mental health hospital by his abusive mother to hide her own crimes against her son, she derives a dialect with Dr Seed, spinning a tale of Jack' delusions of having conversations with his deceased grandfather and how he is violent towards her. She just doesn't feel safe any more. Jack is clever and headstrong, he knows what his mother has done and he accepts that her version of punishment is actually an act of mercy, by removing him from her care has released him from her abusive and oppressive clutch. This is a chance for him to grow and follow his own passions and interests. Things take a turn for the worst as Jack and his new friend Carly are on route to visit a doctor for a routine medical examination, The car crashes, all occupants baring Jack perish, leaving Jack badly wounded and struggling to escape the wreckage before it bursts into flame. Laying unconscious he is saved by a Horned Man, taken from his world to a new strange world. It is here his adventure truly begins, as he grows and starts on a journey to find the second half of a prophecy, to track down a mysterious man known as Sire, to try and release a curse that plagues the whole of this strange new world known to him as Harthdome. Through many trials and hardships, gaining allies along the way. Jack faces down the one who has brought this suffering to the people, he knows what has to be done, and he is willing to see it to the very bitter end.

JDBOOKS has the privilege of an interview with author JAMES HUDSON

Where do you live and is that the setting for your book?

I live in Bradford, West Yorkshire. And

yes my home town is the setting for the

beginning of Sentient Being.

How did you come up with the premise of Sentient Being? Was it something that you experienced?

Well, Interesting question, I wish I could ha e experienced it.

That would be one amazing adventure indeed. I have always

had an over active imagination. It was after watching the

John Carter film that made me think, I could have written this.

How did you come up with an amazing title?

I am a male witch, I believe we are all on a path of

enlightenment,, so for me as Jack my Main Character is on a

journey, he is also becoming wise, enlightened and as such a

Sentient Being sounded to me as though he had achieved

that higher level of self awareness and consciousness.

Your book is a YA Fiction adventure. What drew you to the genre?

you know when they say if you can find the book you want to read,

then write it. This was the case for me. There just did't seem to be any good

YA Fiction adventures. So I wrote one, I hope it is good haha

Do you think writers need to feel strong emotions in order to write a YA Fiction adventure?

Most definitely, I don't think it matters what genre you

write, if its fiction, you need to really put that emotion in

there. I know most writers put themselves into each

part of the story, with that being said, the more

emotional you are the better connection the characters

will have with rhe audience.

In one of my blog pieces, I discuss how to approach writing a book, but it is mainly targeted towards those who want to write books. What advice would you give someone on how to approach writing a YA Fiction adventure?

Start writing, don’t worry about how good the spelling

is, don't think about who is doing what and when. Just

write and let it flow. That’s called a first draft. Get that

done and you are halfway there to a workable

manuscript.

Have any of the part of story in Sentient Being? Been influenced by TV or movie figures? If so, which one(s)?

I always loved He_Man, he had that tiger, cowardly

thing that turned into battle cat. I wanted to write

something that had a tiger in it. So I did that, added

some giants called mega morphs, threw in a little

magic. I think it turned out pretty good.

If you could give your younger self some advice about the writing process, what would it be?

I would tell myself, Don't wait so long to write your first

book, and don’t worry too much if people like it.

What time do you usually start writing and what do you find the hardest part of the writing process?

I don’t have a usual time, with my life being so busy I

just write when I can. For me the hardest part is

editing. It is a very slow and pain staking process. But

it is worth it in the end.

How has writing changed you?

Writing has become therapy for me. By putting the bad

things that has happened in my life in the book, it has

helped me move on, find forgiveness in my heart for

my abusive mother.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Oh, that is an easy question. Family time. Spending

quality time with my Lady.
